Borderline Personality Disorder is a somewhat poorly named, mental illness. One which has been affecting people of all walks of life for years upon years. Until late, it has been reasonably difficult to diagnose and treat and though it is still largely misunderstood, sticking out as a particularly complicated illness, it has become much easier to treat and recognise.
Unlike the name suggests, BPD has nothing to do with normal personality disorders. Suffereres do not find themselves with multiple personalities, nor with a brand new personality. Once thought closely linked with the Bipolar disorder, BPD affects your emotions, sensations and thoughts. Sufferers are often diagnosed with one or several other illnesses before BPD is suspected however, with new information, this is not always the case. On the light side, BPD sufferers are known to be very loyal with an intense wish to please likely due to the fear of rejection and abandonment.
Unfortunately, the stigma attached to BPD due simply to the name, is a major blow to all and any sufferers. Already fearing rejection, many will keep their diagnosis from friends and family. Knowing all too well they may be alienated for it.
